The Big Wet – Not Everything is Cancelled

While the vast majority of our early season passengers have had some form of interruption to their holiday plans so far, one lucky group are travelling unscathed. Some of the residents from the Mareeba Garden Settlement, a Blue Care nursing facility, took advantage of our DDA compliant facilities and did a rail excursion out to Almaden on the Savannahlander Service. This is the second year that the center has used the train for their residents, with many other similar facilities on the Atherton Tablelands taking an interest in undertaking a similar adventure in the near future.

A total of fifty people which included residents, carers and grand children joined the scheduled service at Mareeba for the four hour run over to Almaden. It is possible to cater to this type of group thanks to DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance upgrade made to one of the Savannahlander cars, funded by the state government in the 2007 / 08 financial year.

The group will pass though Mutchilba, Dimbulah and Lappa during their journey, as well as witness the rugged Featherbed, Lappa and Bismark Ranges. On arrival at Almaden, the group will head over to the Railway Hotel at Almaden for lunch, before returning to Mareeba by Coach. All in all, a great break from their usual retirement home routine.
