Gulflander & Savannhlander Itinerary

The Gulflander departs Normanton each Wednesday morning and there’s a connecting bus service between Croydon and Forsayth allowing passengers to catch the Savannahlander on Friday morning. You can also download a PDF version of the Gulflander & Savannahlander Itinerary.

Itinerary - Gulflander


The Trans North bus departs the Cairns (Trans North Bus Stop beside Platform 1 – Cairns Central Railway Station) bound for Karumba via Normanton. It’s a good idea to be there 15 minutes before departure.

The bus arrives in Normanton.  You will be directed to your accommodation.



For those flying…  (please note that times are indicative – please refer to your own ticketing information)

If you’ve chosen to fly to Normanton the flight departs Cairns Airport domestic terminal.  Normal check-in procedures for domestic flights apply. Please refer to your ticket information for checkin times and baggage limits.

Flight arrives at Normanton International Airport. You will need to contact your accommodation provider if you have not already made arrangements to be picked up (ie. Car Hire.)

Car Hire:

Cars are available for hire at your own expense in Normanton from a local company, S&E Car Hire. There are a range of vehicles available, however we recommend that you book ahead to ensure that you secure your ride. A popular destination is Karumba on the Gulf of Carpenteria but some conditions do apply so please mention this when you book your vehicle. Call S&E Car Hire direct on 0419 700 138.




Australia’s second-best train trip, The Gulflander, departs Normanton station. You can walk down to the station if you like or talk to the staff at your accommodation if you would like assistance in any way.


The train stops for 30 minutes so passengers can have a well earned morning tea at Blackbull.


The Gulflander arrives at the end of the line; Croydon. You will be met by the driver of your transfer bus and taken for lunch and a tour of the sights of Croydon. After this, you are driven to Forsayth for you accommodation for the next two nights, arriving late in the afternoon.



Depart for the tour of Cobbold Gorge – Actual times may vary but those participating will be informed on arrival in Forsayth. Lunch is available at the Gorge.

The Savannahlander Arrives from Mt Surprise

Note: Lunch and morning tea are at own expense



The Savannahlander departs Forsayth.


The train arrives in Einasleigh. There’s a decent amount of time here to enjoy the Copperfield Gorge and have lunch at he pub while waiting for the people arriving via Cobbold Gorge to arrive by bus.  Lunch is at the Einasleigh pub.

The Savannahlander arrives in Mt Surprise for an overnight stay. If you’re staying at Undara Lava Tubes you’ll be picked up and transferred to your accommodation by Undara Experience staff. Those staying in Mt Surprise and not doing an Undara tour have the rest of the afternoon off.

If you’re staying in Mt Surprise and doing a tour of the lava tubes with Bedrock Village, your bus will pick you up to head out to the tubes.

Passengers staying at Undara commence their tour with the staff from Undara Experience.

If you’re on the tour of the Undara Lava Tubes with the staff from Bedrock Village you’ll arrive back in Mt Surprise and can relax after a busy day!

The Savannahlander departs Mt Surprise. We’re joined by passengers enjoying a Surprise Getaway or the 2 day Undara with rail.


We arrive in Almaden for an early lunch at the Railway Hotel.


The train departs Almaden.


A quick stop in Dimbulah, have a look at the museum that has been set up in the old station building and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.


The Savannahlander arrives at Kuranda. There’s a short break for a leg stretch and a look at the gardens.


The train stops at Barron Falls station.


The Savannahlander finishes its four day journey when it arrives at Cairns station.
