Gulflander & Savannhlander Itinerary

The Gulflander departs Normanton each Wednesday morning and there’s a connecting bus service between Croydon and Forsayth allowing passengers to catch the Savannahlander on Friday morning. You can also download a PDF version of the Gulflander & Savannahlander Itinerary.

Itinerary - Gulflander

Monday

6.25am
The Trans North bus departs Reef Fleet Terminal bound for Karumba via Normanton. It’s a good idea to be there 15 minutes before departure.

4.45pm
The bus arrives in Normanton and stops opposite the Normanton Tourist Park where passengers usually spend the night.

Tuesday

For those flying…  (please note that times are indicative – please refer to your own ticketing information)

12:10pm
If you’ve chosen to fly to Normanton the flight departs Cairns Airport domestic terminal.  Normal check-in procedures for domestic flights apply. Please refer to your ticket information for checkin times and baggage limits.

13:50pm
Flight arrives at Normanton International Airport. You’ll need to catch a taxi (at your own expense) to the Normanton Tourist Park as the airport is a little way out of town.

Wednesday

8.30am

Australia’s second-best train trip, The Gulflander, departs Normanton station. The station is about a kilometre from the Normanton Tourist Park. You can walk down to the station if you like or the staff from the tourist park can give you a lift.

11.15am

The train stops for 30 minutes so passengers can have a well earned morning tea at Blackbull.

1.30pm

The Gulflander arrives at the end of the line; Croydon. You will be met by the driver of your transfer bus and taken for lunch and a tour of the sights of Croydon. After this, you are driven to Forsayth for you accommodation for the next two nights, arriving late in the afternoon.

 

Thursday

AM:
Depart for the tour of Cobbold Gorge – Actual times may vary but those participating will be informed on arrival in Forsayth. Lunch is available at the Gorge.

5.30 PM
The Savannahlander Arrives from Mt Surprise

Note: Lunch and morning tea are at own expense

Friday

8.30am

The Savannahlander departs Forsayth.

11.15am

The train arrives in Einasleigh. There’s a decent amount of time here to enjoy the gorge and have lunch at he pub while waiting for the people who have done the Cobbold Gorge to arrive by bus.  Lunch is at the Einasleigh pub.

12.15pm

The train departs Einasleigh.

2.15pm
The Savannahlander arrives in Mt Surprise for an overnight stay. If you’re staying at Undara Lava Tubes you’ll be picked up and transferred to your accommodation by Undara Experience staff. Those staying in Mt Surprise and not doing an Undara tour have the rest of the afternoon off.

2.45pm
If you’re staying in Mt Surprise and doing a tour of the lava tubes with Bedrock Village your bus will pick you up to head out to the tubes.

3.30pm
Passengers staying at Undara commence their tour with the staff from Undara Experience.

5.30pm
If you’re on the tour of the Undara Lava Tubes with the staff from Bedrock Village you’ll arrive back in Mt Surprise and can relax after a busy day!

Saturday

8.00am

The Savannahlander departs Mt Surprise. We’re joined by passengers enjoying a Surprise Getaway or the 2 day Undara with rail.

11.05am

We arrive in Almaden for morning tea at the Railway Hotel.

11:35am

The train departs Almaden.

1:45pm

Lunch in Dimbulah, have a look at the museum that has been set up in the old station building and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

4.45pm

The Savannahlander arrives at Kuranda. There’s a short break for a leg stretch and a look at the gardens.

5.00pm

The train stops at Barron Falls station.

6.30pm

The Savannahlander finishes its four day journey when it arrives at Cairns station.
